Generate prompts with AI

Writing system prompts is a knack. If you don't have it, ask the model to do it for you.

How

  1. Open Settings → Prompts.
  2. Click + New prompt, then Generate with AI.
  3. Describe what the prompt should do in plain English — "Take any text and rewrite it as a haiku, preserving meaning".
  4. ClipSlop sends the description to your default provider and inserts the generated system prompt into the System prompt field.
  5. Tweak, save, test.

Why this beats writing prompts yourself

Models know what good system prompts look like — they've ingested thousands. The generated baseline is usually 80% there, and editing 20% beats writing 100%.

Iterating

If the first generated prompt produces shaky results:

  • Edit the description to be more specific. "Rewrite as a haiku" is vague; "Rewrite as a strict 5-7-5 haiku in English, preserving the literal meaning of the input, no commentary" is better.
  • Click Regenerate to get a fresh attempt.
  • Once it's working, save and assign a mnemonic.

Provider for generation

Use a smarter model (Claude Sonnet, GPT-4o) for prompt generation, even if the prompt itself will be run by a fast model. Generation happens once; running happens hundreds of times. The cost asymmetry favours quality at generation time.
