Players & Roles
Thousand is most commonly played by three players, each playing for themselves. Within a single deal, players take on temporary roles that change every hand.
The three permanent positions
Forehand

│
Rearhand ◄─► Middlehand
- Forehand — the player to the dealer's left; leads the first trick before bidding and acts first in the auction.
- Middlehand — the player to the forehand's left.
- Rearhand (the Dealer) — shuffles, deals, and acts last.
The dealer rotates clockwise after each deal.
Roles within a single deal
Roles are assigned at the end of the auction phase and last only for that deal:
| Role | How they get it | What they do |
|---|---|---|
| Declarer (also "soloist", "winner of the auction") | Wins the bidding | Takes the talon, may raise their bid, names trump, and plays alone against both opponents. |
| Defenders | The other two players | Cooperate without sharing information to stop the declarer from making their contract. |
| Dealer | Rotates clockwise | Shuffles and deals; opponent of the dealer to their left is forehand. |
Defenders cannot collude openly
Defenders may not show cards, signal, or discuss strategy. They simply share the goal of preventing the declarer from making their contract — and each defender keeps their own independent score.
Player counts other than three
Thousand has well-developed variants for 2, 4 and even 6 players. They adjust roles as follows:
- 2 players — head-to-head; usually no talon, or a face-up talon. See Two-player Variant.
- 4 players — usually played in fixed partnerships (across the table); the dealer sits out each hand or plays as a fourth defender. See Four-player Variant.
- 6 players — two teams of three with cross-table partnerships; rare but documented in some Russian sources.
The role names declarer / defenders / dealer carry over across variants; only the number of seats and the partnership structure change.
